Finding Your Fall "Hygge": How to Create a Cozy Home

Have you ever heard of hygge? Pronounced "hoo-ga," it’s the Danish concept of creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. I, Breanna, personally recommend the book "The Little Book of Hygge" by Meik Wiking. As the crisp Pacific Northwest air rolls in and the leaves start to change, fall is the absolute perfect time to bring a little hygge into your daily routine.

But true relaxation is hard to find if you’re staring at muddy floors or a long weekend chore list. To help you embrace the season, here’s how to create a cozy, stress-free haven at home—plus a few of our favorite family-friendly spots around Tualatin to enjoy the autumn weather!

3 Steps to a "Hygge" Home

  • Create Visual Peace: Hygge is all about a sense of calm. It’s hard to feel peaceful when you’re surrounded by clutter. Take a weekend to clear off the countertops, put away lingering summer gear, and clear your living spaces. A tidy, uncluttered room is the blank canvas you need for true relaxation.

  • Layer the Coziness: Once your space is clean and clear, bring out the textures! Wash your heavy throw blankets, fluff the pillows, and set up a dedicated reading or coffee nook. (Bonus points if your nook is next to a freshly dusted windowsill so you can watch the rain fall.)

  • Set the Mood with Scent and Light: Warm lighting is essential for hygge. Once your kitchen and living room are sparkling clean, light a few autumn-scented candles (think cinnamon, cedar, or vanilla), turn off the harsh overhead lights, and turn on the table lamps. There is nothing quite like the glow of a candle in a freshly cleaned room.
